Around this time, Mullin’s mother gave him a copy of The Agony and the Ecstasy, a biography of Michelangelo. She hoped that it might inspire her son, and it did, but not in the way Mrs. Mullin had hoped. When Herb read that Michelangelo dissected bodies in order to better understand the human form, Mullin decided that he wanted to do likewise.

He set out again in his Chevy station wagon and this time encountered Mary Guilfoyle hiking (ironically, the spot where Guilfoyle had chosen to hitch a ride was just blocks away from the house of Edmund Kemper, another notorious serial killer active in Santa Cruz at that time). Guilfoyle was running late for an interview and was relieved to get a ride so quickly, but as soon as she was relaxed in the passenger seat, Mullin pulled into a side street and stabbed her in the chest with a hunting knife, killing her instantly. He then drove her into the woods, found a quite spot and conducted a crude “autopsy”, ripping the body apart and removing the organs. Mullin would later blame this murder on his mother, saying she gave him the Michelangelo book as a “hint” that he should commit the crime.
